We are seeking candidates in both the Calgary, AB, and Kitchener, ON regions for two available positions.
Basic Function
The Electrical Distribution Designer – Intermediate Position is responsible for designing multiple overhead and underground distribution projects in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for the accuracy, quality, and constructability of designs, calculations, and estimates for electrical utility projects of all sizes. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Electrical Distribution Designer – Intermediate Position to progress designs through all project stages. The Electrical Distribution Designer – Intermediate Position contributes to bid proposals, estimates, and material calculations and is responsible for the accuracy of quoted work. The Electrical Distribution Designer – Intermediate Position is responsible for the handover of high-quality design packages to the client or project team, on schedule, and is responsible for resolving design-related issues and field-level questions while projects are underway. They will work closely with project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time. Directly reports to the Engineering Manager.
Qualifications
Education
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology.
- Registration or eligibility for registration as a P. Eng. or PL. Eng. with APEGA or PEO is an asset.
Experience
- 2-4 years experience working in an electrical engineering environment.
- Experience in utility distribution design is an asset.
- Understanding utility standards and specifications is an asset, i.e. CSA or utility-specific standards.
Skills
- Advanced experience in managing multiple proposals, estimates, and designs at the same time.
- Ability to prepare engineering drawings from sketches and general engineering and design information according to established standards and procedures.
- Capable of developing estimates based on drawings and scopes of work.
- Ability to read and comprehend electrical and construction plans from utilities, customers, and consultants.
- Superior ability to meet tight deadlines and multi-task.
- Capacity to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
- Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities, and utility representatives.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively lead, train and provide mentorship to other designers and drafting professionals.
- Ability to understand client-specific requirements (standards and specifications) and applicable codes & regulations for preparing design packages.
- Ability to maintain customer relationships while identifying and supporting and establishing new opportunities and business lines.
- Understanding of project financial accounting and controls including change management processes and the creation of change orders.
- Experience with design and project-related software such as Bluebeam, MicroStation, AutoCAD, PLS CADD, SPIDAcalc, AUD, PullPlanner would be considered an asset.

- This position is a mix of office and fieldwork. A small portion of this position’s time will require fieldwork.
Duties
Estimating, Design, and Project Management
- Prepare quotations and proposals using standard templates using Microsoft Office software.
- Analyze plans and utility documentation to complete designs that meet client requirements.
- Perform engineering calculations such as pole line analysis, pulling tension calculations, etc.
- Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam or other design software to prepare designs from the conceptual stage through to project completion.
- Submit design packages for approval.
- Prepare design packages consisting of plan and profile drawings, attachments, and clearance spreadsheets.
- As required, compile project Bill of Materials (BOMs) based on drawings, specifications, codes and standards to be submitted to procurement for purchasing.
- Obtain all necessary permits, agreements, and design approvals required for project execution including line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, environmental approvals, utility design approvals as well as project-related client contractual and financial related documents.
- Collaborate with design consultants and utilities.
- Facilitate or attend various external site and project-related meetings.
- Facilitate or attend all internal project meetings such as project handoffs, kick-offs, and reviews.
- Monitor project budget, costs, and scope. Follow change control processes and issue change orders as required.
- Collaborate with Project Management to prevent issues and ensure that design related issues are prioritized and resolved quickly to maintain schedules and prevent work stoppages or downtime for construction crews.
- Other duties as required.
