Summary

The Heavy Duty Technician Apprentice (HDT) will work with and receive mentorship from the Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic.  The HDT Apprentice is accountable for supporting equipment maintenance and repair activities, specifically focusing on company trucks and trailers utilized for their respective work scope. The HDT Apprentice also assists the Fleet Team with building and yard maintenance, repair, and other required tasks.

Qualifications

  • High School or GED are preferred.
  • Diesel and Gasoline engine maintenance/repair is an asset.
  • Clean Class 5 Drivers License
  • Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement or Class 1 is an asset.
  • Strong computer literacy in Word, Excel and Outlook is an asset.
  • Valid First Aid/AED Certification is an asset.
  • Basic hand tool knowledge
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Genuine desire to learn the Heavy Duty Technician trade
  • Previous experience in a maintenance/repair shop is an asset.
  • Prior enrolment in the Alberta Apprenticeship program is an asset.
  • Familiarity with and operation of utility equipment (bucket trucks, digger derricks, trailers, etc) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with “yellow iron” and operation of (John Deere, Komatsu, etc) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with small engines and operation of (Honda, Deutz, etc) is an asset.

Duties

  • Assist the Journeyperson Heavy Duty Technician
  • Support Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) inspections.
  • Support Annual Vehicle Inspection Program (AVIP) inspections.
  • Perform daily safety and preventative maintenance checks on company fleet and rental units.
  • Identify and report equipment/vehicle deficiencies and prescribe corrective measures.
  • Pre-order necessary repair parts and materials and retrieve from vendor.
  • Wash and clean exterior/interior of equipment/vehicles.
  • Yard maintenance as required/when schedule allows (mow lawns, weed control, snow removal, etc.)
  • Building maintenance as required (Non mechanical)
  • Maintain a tidy and organized workshop area.
  • Complete FLHA forms daily.
  • Complete required Iconic documents and reports.
  • Ensure Alberta Apprenticeship “Blue Book” is kept up to date.
  • Maintain a clean driver’s license and report any traffic violations.
