BASIC FUNCTION

The Substation Electrical Designer is responsible for designing multiple Substation design projects in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for the accuracy, quality and constructability of designs, calculations and estimates for electrical utility projects of all sizes. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Substation Designer to progress designs through all project stages. The Substation Electrical Designer contributes to Substation bid proposals, estimates and material calculations and is responsible for the accuracy of quoted work.  The Substation Electrical Designer is responsible for handover of high-quality design packages to the customer or project team, on schedule, and is responsible for resolving design related issues and field level questions while projects are underway. The Substation Electrical Designer needs to work closely with project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time. Directly reports to the Engineering Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology.

Experience

  • 1-3 years’ experience working in an electrical engineering environment, with extensive experience in substation projects.
  • Understanding of utility standards and specifications would be an asset i.e., AltaLink, ATCO standards etc.
  • Familiarity with P&C, SCADA, maintenance and operational practices is considered an asset.

Skills

  • Ability to prepare engineering drawings from sketches and general engineering and design information according to established standards and procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to visualize and evaluate equipment details, phase-to-ground, phase-to-phase clearances, and drawing relationships.
  • Ability to read and comprehend electrical and construction plans from utilities, customers, and consultants.
  • Growing level knowledge of industry specifications for high voltage electrical equipment
  • Ability to manage and deliver Physical Engineering deliverables as per project schedule and within budget.
  • Ability to work closely with Drafters, Engineers and Leads to meet with project timelines for engineering deliverables.
  • Ability to understand client specific requirements (standards & specifications) and applicable codes & regulations for preparing physical electrical packages.
  • Superior ability to meet tight deadlines and multi-task.
  • Able to develop project schedules based on proposal details.
  • Capacity to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities and utility representatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively lead, train and provide mentorship to other designers and drafting professionals.
  • Ability to maintain customer relationships while identifying and supporting and establishing new opportunities and business lines.
  • Ability to understand client specific requirements (standards and specifications) and applicable codes & regulations for preparing physical electrical packages.
  • Understanding of project financial accounting and controls including change management processes and the creation of change orders.
  • Experience with estimating, design, and project related software such as Bluebeam and MicroStation would be considered an asset.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • This position is a mix of office and field work. A small portion of this position’s time will require fieldwork.

DUTIES:

Estimating, Design and Project Management

  • As required, compile project BOM’s based on drawings, specifications, codes, and standards to be submitted to procurement for purchasing.
  • Analyze customer plans and utility documentation to develop Substation project proposals, preliminary designs, and schedules.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam or other design software to prepare designs from conceptual stage through to project completion.
  • Preparation of Electrical Physical design packages consisting of Single Line, Site Plan, Electrical Plan & Sections, Grounding Plan & Details, Conduit Plan & Details.
  • Interpret and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables.
  • Collaborate with design consultants and utilities. Facilitate or attend various external site and project related meetings.
  • Coordinate with designers and engineers of other disciplines to complete deliverables.
  • Facilitate or attend all internal project meetings such as project handoff, kick-offs, and reviews.
  • Monitor project budget, costs, and scope. Follow change control processes and issue change orders as required.
  • Collaborate with Project Management to prevent issues and ensure that design related issues are prioritized and resolved quickly to maintain schedules and prevent work stoppages or downtime for construction crews.
  • Other duties as required.
