BASIC FUNCTION:

The Electrical Substation Designer is responsible designing multiple Substation design projects in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for the accuracy, quality and constructability of designs, calculations and estimates for electrical utility projects of all sizes. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Electrical Substation Designer to progress designs through all project stages. The Electrical Substation Designer contributes to Substation bid proposals, estimates and material calculations and is responsible for the accuracy of quoted work.  The Electrical Substation Designer is responsible for handover of high-quality design packages to the customer or project team, on schedule, and is responsible to resolve design related issues and field level questions while projects are underway. The Electrical Substation Designer needs to work closely with project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time. Directly reports to the Engineering Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • A Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or a Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a P.Eng or PL.Eng with APEGA.

Experience

  • At least three years’ experience working in an electric engineering environment, with extensive experience in substation design and cost estimating of electrical Substation projects.
  • Understanding in utility standard and specifications would be an asset i.e., AltaLink, ATCO standards etc.

Skills

  • Advanced experience in managing multiple proposals, estimates and designs at the same time.
  • Ability to prepare engineering drawings from sketches and general engineering and design information according to established standards and procedures.
  • Capable of developing estimates based on drawings and scopes of work.
  • Subject matter expert in utility design and construction including applicable electrical codes, standards and specifications.
  • Ability to read and comprehend electrical and construction plans from utilities, customers and consultants.
  • Superior ability to meet tight deadlines and multi-task.
  • Able to develop project schedules based on proposal details.
  • Capacity to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities and utility representatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively lead, train and provide mentorship to other designers and drafting professionals.
  • Ability to maintain customer relationships while identifying and supporting and establishing new opportunities and business lines.
  • Ability to understand client specific requirements (standards and specifications) and applicable codes & regulations for preparing physical electrical packages.
  • Understanding of project financial accounting and controls including change management processes and the creation of change orders.
  • Experience with estimating, design and project related software such as Bluebeam, MicroStation, and AutoCAD, would be considered an asset.

  • This position is a mix of office and field work. A small portion of this position’s time will require field work.

DUTIES:

Estimating, Design and Project Management

  • Prepare quotations and proposals using standard templates using Accubid, InDesign and Microsoft Office software.
  • Prepare accurate estimates of costs of materials, labour, and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications.
  • As required, compile project BOM’s based on drawings, specifications, codes and standards to be submitted to procurement for purchasing.
  • Analyze customer plans and utility documentation in order to develop Substation project proposals, preliminary designs and schedules.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam or other design software to prepare designs from conceptual stage through to project completion.
  • Submission of design packages for approval.
  • Preparation of Electrical Physical design packages consisting of Single Line, Site Plan, Electrical Plan & Sections, Grounding Plan & Details, Conduit Plan & Details.
  • Interpret and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables.
  • Obtain all necessary permits, agreements and design approvals required for project execution including line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, environmental approvals, utility design approvals as well as project related client contractual and financial related documents.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as pole line analysis, pulling tension calculations etc.
  • Collaborate with design consultants and utilities. Facilitate or attend various external site and project related meetings.
  • Coordinate with designers and engineers of other disciplines to complete deliverables.
  • Facilitate or attend all internal project meetings such as project handoff, kickoffs, and reviews.
  • Monitor project budget, costs and scope. Follow change control processes and issue change orders as required.
  • Collaborate with Project Management to prevent issues and ensure that design related issues are prioritized and resolved quickly to maintain schedules and prevent work stoppages or downtime for construction crews.
  • Other duties as required.
