Summary

The Buyer position, based in Ontario, is responsible for the procurement of goods, materials and services to ensure the company’s operational needs are met while achieving the best combination of price, quality and timing. This role supports ongoing operational and project requirements through strategic sourcing, vendor management and purchase order administration, in compliance with company policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • 3–7+ years of purchasing/buying experience in a construction or project environment.
  • CPM, CPSM, CPIM, or equivalent certification is desirable but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Business, Operations Management, Engineering or related field is desirable but not required.
  • Trade Certification in a related field (Powerline Technician, Electrician, Mechanic, etc.) would be considered as an alternative for the right candidate.
  • Other combinations of education, trades experience, industry experience or procurement experience may be considered.

Skills

  • Strong negotiation skills and proven ability to achieve cost savings.
  • Solid understanding of procurement best practices, Incoterms, contract terms, and supply chain fundamentals.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data analysis).
  • Industry specific knowledge of Transmission & Distribution Power would be considered a strong asset.
  • Able to manage time and workload efficiently.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices and procedures in a safety focused construction workplace would be considered an asset.

Duties

  • Review and process purchase requisitions (or BOMs) for accuracy, completeness, potential errors, clarify specifications, delivery requirements, and technical details, seeking clarity with requesting departments as needed.
  • Prepare and issue formal and informal Requests for Quotation (RFQs), analyze bids, and negotiate pricing, payment terms, delivery schedules, and contract conditions to achieve total cost of ownership savings.
  • Place purchase orders, expedite critical items, and maintain accurate delivery schedules independently in the absence of a robust ERP/MRP system.
  • Revise timing for deliveries and work for both existing purchases and new planned material to meet changing project schedules and requirements.
  • Monitor supplier performance (on-time delivery, quality, cost) and drive corrective actions when necessary.
  • Identify, evaluate, and maintain an approved vendor base; continuously seek new sources of supply to improve cost, quality, and delivery performance.
  • Make decisions around specific commodities to support project management while minimizing excess materials.
  • Support cost-reduction initiatives and continuously be alert to alternative sourcing opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records, pricing files, and system data (item master, vendor master, cross-references, item nomenclature etc.).
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Project Management, operations, fleet and Warehouse teams to forecast material requirements and resolve supply issues.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, ISO/other quality standards, trade regulations, and ethical sourcing practices.
  • Participate in new product introduction and vendor demos.
