DISTRIBUTION DESIGNER (JUNIOR)

Basic Function

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Distribution Designer (Junior) is responsible for designing multiple overhead and underground distribution projects in a fast-paced environment. Under the guidance of experienced team members, the Distribution Designer (Junior) will be responsible for the accuracy, quality and constructability of designs and calculations for electrical utility projects of all sizes. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Distribution Designer (Junior) to progress designs through all project stages. Training and mentorship will be provided by senior team members at all stages of the projects.

Qualifications

Education

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or a Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology.
  • Registration or eligibility as a P. Eng. or PL. Eng. with APEGA or PEO is an asset.

Experience

  • 1-2 years experience working in an electrical engineering environment.
  • Experience in utility distribution design is an asset.
  • Understanding of utility standards and specifications is an asset, i.e. CSA or utility specific standards.
  • Experience with design and project related software such as Bluebeam, MicroStation & AutoCAD
  • PLS CADD, AUD, PullPlanner & SPIDAcalc would be considered an asset.

Other

  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • This position is a mix of office and field work. A small portion of this position’s time will require fieldwork.

Duties

  • Analyze plans and utility documentation to complete designs that meet client requirements.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as pole line analysis, pulling tension calculations etc.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam or other design software to prepare designs from conceptual stage through to project completion.
  • Submit design packages for approval.
  • Prepare design packages consisting of plan and profile drawings, attachment, and clearance spreadsheets.
  • As required, compile project Bill of Materials (BOMs) based on drawings, specifications, codes, and standards to be submitted to procurement for purchasing.
  • Obtain all necessary permits, agreements and design approvals required for project execution including line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, environmental approvals, utility design approvals as well as project related client contractual and financial related documents.
  • Collaborate with design consultants and utilities.
  • Facilitate or attend various external site and project related meetings.
  • Facilitate or attend all internal project meetings such as project handoff, kick offs, and reviews.
  • Monitor project budget, costs, and scope. Follow change control processes and issue change orders as required.
  • Collaborate with Project Management to prevent issues and ensure that design related issues are prioritized and resolved quickly to maintain schedules and prevent work stoppages or downtime for construction crews.
