Summary

The Lead SCADA Engineer is responsible for the design of high-voltage substation projects in a fast-paced environment. They are responsible for the accuracy, quality, and constructability of designs, calculations, and estimates for utility projects of all sizes. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Lead SCADA Engineer to progress designs through all project stages. The Lead SCADA Engineer contributes to the substation bid proposals, estimates, and material calculations and is responsible for the accuracy of quoted work. They are responsible for the handover of high-quality design packages to the customer or project team, on schedule, and is responsible for resolving design-related issues and field-level questions while projects are underway. The Lead SCADA Engineer works closely with the Project Management team to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or a Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology.
  • Registration as a P.Eng or PL.Eng with APEGA
  • 8+ years of utility-specific substation design experience.
  • Experience executing EPC projects is an asset.
  • Familiarity with protection and control, maintenance, and operational practices is considered an asset.

Duties

Estimating, Design, and Project Management

  • Prepare accurate estimates of costs of materials, labour, and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications.
  • As required, compile project BOMs based on drawings, specifications, codes, and standards to be submitted to procurement for purchasing.
  • Review substation design drawings to identify all possible SCADA inputs and outputs.
  • Generate point lists based on elementary wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and off-taker requirements (independent system operators, transmission facility operators, owners, equipment manufacturers).
  • Configure, test, and commission RTUs.
  • Develop, test, and commission HMIs.
  • Document SCADA systems.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam, or other design software to prepare designs from the conceptual stage through to project completion.
  • Submission of design packages for approval.
  • Collaborate with other disciplined engineers like Protection and Control, and Electrical to deliver a design package.
  • Collaborate with design consultants and utilities. Facilitate or attend various external site and project-related meetings.
  • Facilitate or attend all internal project meetings such as project handoffs, kickoffs, and reviews.
  • Monitor project budget, costs, and scope. Follow change control processes and issue change orders as required.
  • Collaborate with Project Management to prevent issues and ensure that design-related issues are prioritized and resolved quickly to maintain schedules and prevent work stoppages or downtime for construction crews.
  • Provide RFI and engineering support during construction activities.
  • Provide training for new hires and junior members of the team.
